Our Defense

Today in my quiet time with God, I have learned more about the Holy Spirit. I am continuing in a study, “God’s Love Alive in You,” and day five is about our defense against Anti-Christs. The question is asked, “What defense do we have to keep us from being deceived?” There are teachers out there in books, on TV, in churches and some of them are telling the truth, while others are not. How do we know if what we are hearing or reading is true? God gives us the Holy Spirit, also called the Counselor, Spirit of Truth, etc.

Here is what I have learned about the Holy Spirit this afternoon.

1 John 2:18-19 says:

The Holy Spirit comes upon us and lives within us. We don’t need anyone to teach us what is true. The Holy Spirit teaches all things and what he teaches is true, not a lie.

John 16:5-16 (This comes from Jesus  just before he returns to the Father.)

The Counselor will convince the world of its sin (unbelief in Christ), God’s righteousness and the coming judgement.

The Spirit of Truth will guide us into all truth. He will not be presenting his own ideas but will be telling you of what he has heard of the future. He will bring Christ glory by revealing to us whatever he receives from Christ.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who lives in us and was given to us by God.

James 4:5

The Spirit jealousy longs for us to be faithful.

I will continue to share with you what I am learning as I study throughout the summer. I’d love to hear your thoughts or your stories. Please email them to me at

Crisis Christianity

By Alison Lehman

As Nathan talked this morning about Crisis Christianity I felt like he was talking to me. It is not uncommon for me to get sidetracked and miss out on my daily time with God. When one or two days get missed, it’s easier for the third and fourth to get missed also and next thing I know I’m walking on vulnerable, shakey ground. I hate that I often fall into a pattern like this and then desperately cry out to God when a crisis comes, cause one always does! For this reason I joined an LTG but because of busy schedules some weeks get missed and I get lazy.

We stopped meeting altogether about a month ago because it’s a busy season for us all right now and since then my Bible reading has been almost non-existent. I am not a self-disciplined person. I need someone in my life encouraging me to “get at it.” I also find it difficult to just read the Bible and get meaning out of it. I need to journal to stay focused and interested.

Recently, one of my accountability partners emailed and asked how my reading was going and sent a daily devotional. It was inspiring and motivated me to go on Kay Arthur’s website for Precept Bible studies. I thought that if I had a resource to help me along, I’d be more likely to get into the word daily. I ordered a study called, “God’s Love Alive in You.” It’s a study of 1 John and James. I got it in the mail three days ago and I am back in the game. I’ve got the coloured pencils out and I’m studying my Bible like I never have and I really enjoy it. I know it’s only day three but I find myself looking forward to that time of connecting with God and doing it intentionally. I can’t wait to share with you what I’m learning.

I’d really prefer to do life in peace, walking with God everyday than coasting day to day hoping that a crisis doesn’t reach out and bite me then frantically have to beg God to help me out of a mess. So as Nathan suggested, I’m going to work hard at cultivating a relationship!
